And again our ship slowly flew closer and closer to the other one as it was happening every year at the same time. I heard how they clang together and how mechanics were trying to seal all gaps between constructions as soon as possible. After that only few seconds went calmly by as people started to gather in the main arena and filled the air with mixture of heavy stench.
Everyone were screaming and laughing, clapping hands and crying. It was an unbearable noise both to my ears and heart, but it was too loud to shut it off completely. Mother was trying to mollify me as she saw the dread in my eyes and how hard my little hands were shaking but I was too nervous to even hear her voice. Only the recorded lion roar woke me up. Her universe blue eyes were looking at me with such determination they scared me more than this stupid tournament.
After the second roar my heart started to pound harder than before and even her calming voice didn't soothe me any more as I knew what will happen and for what purpose this so called "celebration" was organized.
I didn't knew the weapon someone placed in my hand as till that moment I wasn't allowed to fight or even think about it. It was pointy and small as a pen but with a comfortable thing to hold on to, there was some kind of markings on it and the only thing I knew was that they were red but nothing more. It really sucked to be a new one in this tournament of death and madness.
Another lion roar played and I knew – the fight will start after the next one. By now my heart pounded so hard I could feel it in every muscle in my body and for some time it felt like I am going to throw it out, instead I just looked at my mother and allowed myself to smile at her just to show my appreciation and maybe calm her down. I knew she was nervous as well even if she tried so hard not to show it. Then she just looked straight ahead with such determination I will never forget. Her body language was intense but at the same time so beautifully strong and powerful. Her mesmerizing eyes were gentle when they looked at me but deadly serious for others. I know now that she made everyone fear of her confidence and this fear distracted enemies.
Doors in front of us slowly opened and I grabbed my mothers' hand so tight I was surprised how much strength I still had in me. We both stepped into the arena and my head started to swirl of how many people actually were around us and how loud they all were. Strangely dopey aroma swirled into my nose and suddenly I couldn't hold in my lunch anymore. I got really angry at myself because I never had tasted beef before and now the food was spoiled all over my naked feet and fighting gown. I tried not to look around anymore as I didn't want to see everyone laughing at me and these faces made me hate this event more and more, and suddenly I really felt a need to actually kill someone just so this nightmare is over, but instead we suddenly stopped walking and my eyes met with our opponents.
Celebration fights happened once per 10 years and then usual fights turned into stupid assassination as both parties sent into the arena were the oldest and the youngest person on all ship. The oldest ones usually participated voluntary however the youngest ones were chosen by the Queen or the King, depending from which ship you were coming from, and the rule was to choose the one who was the closest to 6th year birthday as that age was supposedly to become a fighters year when they started to teach new fighters of becoming real patriots of our realm. This year was the saddest one in our knowing history of our kind as this was the first time when all family members participated in it. Yes, I was looking at my father and brother in front of me and I heard the crowd making vitriolic comments and only few of them started to cry when shunter introduced us ... but I didn't heard that any more. I was looking at my father as I haven't seen him since last year as we were allowed to meet them only in fighting events and even then for only few minutes. Then I looked at my brother who was calm and even made a fighting stance in front of me. I didn't know how it was supposed to look like, but I knew this wasn't a way how normal person would stand. Mother released my arm and grabbed her sword tighter - as did my father. I looked at my little pen size thingy and didn't knew what to do with it – prick my eyes so I won't see this slaughter or better save my precious mother and try to kill my brother or father?
My heart stuck into my throat when the last lion roar appeared and arena went quite. I saw how father looked into my mothers' eyes and suddenly she bent her head just to look at me as if for the last time. I only got a short glimpse of her sad eyes when father took this moment for a first strike opportunity however mother evaded it smoothly. She grabbed my little body below the waist and threw me few meters further. Then father tried to get her one more time with his weapon I didn't knew how to call. It had long wooden handle with metal tip but it looked like it had two heads as there were two sharp pointy ends to it. I screamed in panic as I didn't wanted my mother to get hurt but instead I just attracted her attention and fathers blade cut through her right shoulder. I haven't seen blood before and now ... my stomach spew out something that was still stuck in. I saw my brother standing still and enjoying the view as if he knew I wouldn't be able to strike back. And my sudden realization struck me down on the knees because in every celebration fight there could be only two winners and it seemed like mother and father were trying to kill each other and let us both live.
I knew I couldn't live without her so I squeezed my pen shaped blade tighter in my arm and pointed it towards father. I wanted to jab it into his leg as I wasn't so big to get it somewhere higher. I tried to run but instead I was just slowly walking closer the place mother and father was fighting. I heard few sharp inhalations from the viewers but then suddenly everything went black for me. I remembered how I jabbed my blade into my father's thigh, then I saw how he tried to charge me but mother stood between us at the right moment to save me. Then I remember something really hot running over my head and pouring red leaks all over my body, and then I fell to the ground when my mothers' weight pulled me down. I felt stuck under her and panicked of the possibility to die here in front of everyone for every ones pleasure but then in between these thoughts I saw how my father's body slacked down near me his eyes cold and mothers' sword pierced right through his neck.
I closed my eyes for a bit hoping to wake up from this nightmare in my lovely bed but I woke up after a second or two from devastating pain in my armpit near ribs. For starters I couldn't understand why I felt these pain but then I managed to turn my head to that side to see that one of my father's weapon blades tip pierced through my mothers' body and now started to slowly go through my skin. I thought it was because her slack body pressed on me so I placed my hands on her back and tried to pull her away from me however the blade continued to go through my skin. I couldn't scream as then my mothers' blood poured into my mouth and I started to choke. I couldn't defend myself and I couldn't move at all. I panicked understanding that I could die here together with my father and beloved mother.
The crowd started to scream and applaud, and then they pulled all the lights on us – the survivors! Only then through my mothers' bloody hair I saw my brother standing near us. Crowd only saw that he was pretending to be the one who struck them both down but they didn't see that he was pressing fathers' weapon deeper in my body. Last thing I saw before everything went black was my brothers laughing face and evil eyes looking down on me while his hand still pressed on the weapon allowing it to pierce right through my upper rib cage.
